WELCOME TO Happy Valley

A peaceful wooded paradise in the center of a city.

Treasured for its quirky character and relaxed vibes, Happy Valley is home to an eclectic blend of older folks and the more reserved college crowd. Nestled in between Western Washington University and the bustling Fairhaven neighborhood, Happy Valley offers a quieter residential setting that’s close to excellent Bellingham amenities. Don’t forget hidden local gems like Super Duper Burger and Teriyaki, bodega-like shops, and Whatcom Farm Co-op tucked away in the gorgeous valley.

With a population that leans toward being outdoors-y, activities like gardening, exploring trails, and spending time outside are all popular. The neighborhood is known for being clean, private, safe, and brimming with unique character. Residents tend to be environmentally focused, and their conscientiousness tends to show in the care of their homes. Local schools are excellent, and often within easy, safe walking distance.

WHAT TO DO HERE

Hike the trails, dine in next-door Fairhaven, and take advantage of events at WWU.

Happy Valley residents love spending time outside, whether they’re heading out for a hike, bike, walk, or run on the Interurban Trail, heading to Happy Valley Park, or hiking up to Sehome Hill and exploring the surrounding trails and forested areas. Trails can be found heading in all directions! Happy Valley is home to one of Bellingham’s oldest running city farms, Joe’s Garden, and is populated by deer and other beautiful wildlife in the numerous habitat restoration areas of the valley that are ready to explore.

Locals also enjoy going to the farmers market, taking a stroll to Fairhaven for dining and shopping, or heading to Western Washington University for musical performances or special speakers. All of it’s in easy reach, away from the noise of the typical city center.

“Happy Valley has access to several nature trails in all directions. Sehome Arboretum to the north and Fairhaven Park to the south. All within an easy walk.”

Jerry, Bellingham Resident

“It's an interesting blend of college students and older flower children. This leads to a quiet, relaxed neighborhood ripe with trails and green spaces. Western is on the northern edge of this neighborhood, but it tends to house the quieter students. I lived here for 4 years and only ever heard one loud party.”

Holly, Bellingham Resident

““It is located on the south side of Bellingham between WWU and Fairhaven. There are lots of college kids living there, but you go a couple of blocks and there are some beautiful, safe, fun little pocket neighborhoods. Plus you have the amazing Sehome High School!”
